Future Development

Before we opened Tate Modern in 2000, about 2 million people per year visited us in our London galleries. Today, that figure is closer to 7 million, and over a million more came to our regional galleries in Liverpool and St Ives in 2008.

In addition to the increasing number of visitors wishing to use our galleries, the nature of the artworks being produced is changing. With the inclusion of  installations, videos, performance artworks and large-scale sculpture in the Collection, ever more flexible exhibition spaces are required.

Transforming Tate Modern

Tate Modern already receives far more visitors than it can comfortably accommodate. It was designed for 1.8 million visitors per year, but has reached an average of 4.6 million visitors over recent years. Because of this, there is tremendous pressure on our public facilities and more space is needed to develop the display of the Collection and the programme.

Tate has therefore embarked on a £215 million development to create a spectacular new building designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron with the aim of opening in 2012.

The project will expand Tate Modern to provide:

Transforming Tate Britain

Tate Britain is the home of British art and artists. With a 50 per cent increase in visitor numbers in the last five years, we now need to respond to the need for improvements to gallery spaces and visitor facilities, and to the overwhelming demand for our learning programmes.

Tate Britain has therefore conceived a £45 million development to improve the quality of the public experience at Tate Britain. It aims to realise the building’s potential to display and raise the profile of the best British art, and to increase opportunities and spaces for learning.

Tate St Ives Phase 2

Tate St Ives presents modern and contemporary art, often created in or associated with Cornwall. The gallery has been an outstanding success, welcoming an average of 240,000 visitors per year. It is now developing plans for an exciting new phase.

Working closely with the local community, new proposals are in place for the future of Tate St Ives, which will provide additional gallery space, learning facilities and staff support areas.
