Tate is delighted to announce that Bloomberg is continuing its support of Tate Modern by sponsoring the new Learning Zone and a Multimedia Guide that includes a range of tours and ways to access information about the permanent Collection. Bloomberg has generously supported Tate Modern since it opened in 2000.
Building on this sponsorship, the Learning Zone and the Multimedia Guide use cutting-edge technology to help visitors engage with the history and ideas of modern and contemporary art that feature in the rehang, UBS Openings: Tate Modern Collection. The Learning Zone and Multimedia Guide are available from Tuesday 23 May to coincide with the opening of the rehang.
Situated on the Level 5 concourse at Tate Modern, the Learning Zone is an integrated learning environment directly next to the galleries. It has been specially designed in vibrant red fibreglass by Ab Rogers Design. Each section invites visitors of all ages to explore, through games, films and hands-on activities, different ways of thinking about and looking at modern and contemporary art. Highlights include:
- A wide range of interactives, games and quizzes based around single artworks and their relationships to four major movements of twentieth century art: Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism.
- Touch screens for visitors to choose a combination of archival and contemporary footage of artists discussing their work including Picasso, Giacometti, Pollock, Carl Andre and Cindy Sherman.
- A specially commissioned twenty minute film that explores the art and ideas featured in the four wings of the rehang.
- A set of hands-on games that explore four ideas central to modern and contemporary art: Thinking, Touching, Seeing and Speaking.
- A reading point where visitors can relax and read books.
Multimedia Guide Building on the success of the Audio and Multimedia Guides that were made possible with Bloomberg’s support over the past six years, the new Multimedia Guide will offer a number of different ways to access information about the new Collection Displays. Presented on small handheld computers (PDA’s), the Multimedia Guide features a rich mix of images, audio, films of artists at work, text and other interactive elements. Many of the interactive features are made possible by the use of a wireless network. The tours include a highlights tour of the Collection (in English and other languages including French, Spanish and Italian) and a special children’s tour. More tours will be developed over the next three years.
All these tours are groundbreaking in their scope and will ensure that Tate Modern and Bloomberg continue to lead the international field in this use of cutting-edge technology for gallery interpretation. The tours are available for a nominal fee of £2 for adults and £1 for children and concessions.

For the first time since Tate Modern opened in 2000, all 48 of its galleries devoted to the display of the permanent Collection have been rehung around an entirely new concept. Opening on Tuesday 23 May 2006, the rehang, UBS Openings: Tate Modern Collection, features four wings on Levels 3 and 5. Each wing revolves around a central display that focuses on a key period of innovation in twentieth century art history. The four periods are associated with Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism; Surrealism and Surrealist tendencies; Abstract Expressionism and European Informal Art; and Minimalism.
