Letter to the Censors comprises a scale model of a cinema supported by a wooden scaffolding structure typical of those seen in the artist’s native Havana. Inside the model is a screen on which a montage of the opening credits of films censored in Cuba and abroad is projected. The work represents a film archive of censored titles that has the potential to be infinitely continued. In one corner of the model the censor’s office can be seen through windows. The installation also includes ten small light boxes with black-and-white photographs depicting the decaying facades of Cuban cinemas. By highlighting the destruction of the cinemas, the work critically examines the association of Havana with picturesque decay.
