This film explores the sketchbooks of renowned 20th century painter Graham Sutherland, specifically looking at how and why they were digitised for Tate Archive. The sketches show his ideas and observations as they developed later into paintings, illustrating the value of archive collections for our understanding of an artists' practice.

Graham Vivian Sutherland OM (24 August 1903 – 17 February 1980) was an English artist who is notable for his work in glass, fabrics, prints and portraits. His work was much inspired by landscape and religion, and he designed the tapestry for the re-built Coventry Cathedral.
