Artist biography

Lady DAVIS (née Mary Halford) 1866–1941

Painter and designer of fans. Born 22 March 1866 in London; studied at the Ridley Art School. Married Edmund Davis 1889; he was knighted 1927 and died 1939 when his collection from Chilham Castle, including Whistler's ‘At the Piano’, was sold. She exhibited at the R.A. from 1896, Paris Salon from 1898, International Society, etc. Joint exhibition with Conder of fans and drawings on silk at the Colnaghi & Obach Gallery, New York, 1914. Died at Romsey, Hampshire, 30 October 1941.
