William TOWNSEND b. 1909
Landscape painter. Born 23 February 1909 in London. Studied at the Slade School 1926–30. Travelled in France, Italy and the Near East 1929–30. First one-man exhibition at the Bloomsbury Gallery 1932 and exhibited with the London Group from 1931. Associated with the Euston Road School 1937–9. Served with the Royal Artillery and the Army Educational Corps 1941–6. Conducted Arts Wing of the Army School of Education, Preston, 1945–6. Taught at Camberwell School of Art 1946–9 and at the Slade School from 1949; Reader in Fine Art in the University of London since 1961. Visited Canada to teach at the University of Alberta's Summer School of Fine Arts, Banff, 1951. Member of the London Group 1951.
