The artist, together with his wife Gertrude Bone, made repeated visits to Spain over a number of years, preparing the de luxe publication Old Spain of 1936 (see Gertrude Bone, Days in Old Spain, 1938). This drawing was perhaps made during a visit to Gerona in 1926.
