During the 1920s, Buchheister painted in a geometric, abstract style, influenced by Constructivism. With the rise of Nazism, his avant-garde approach was seen as reflecting seditious foreign influences, and he was condemned as a degenerate artist, and forbidden to continue painting. He began to make art again after the war, now following the more gestural, calligraphic style seen in these works.
