Display caption
Calvert was born in rural Devonshire and when he was fifteen years old he joined the navy which he left in 1820. With his taste for outdoor life and adventure he became, in the words of one twentieth century writer, 'saturated with images of rustic life, never separating Earth from her children, and seeing in the round of the seasons... a kind of sacred ritual which was to be the inspiration of his art.' In this work the spectator shares, as it were, the artist's own role as the watchful herdsman in some place out of time.
