Purchased from the artist through the Axiom Gallery (Knapping Fund) 1966.

The artist wrote (15 May 1966): ‘My first constructions were made in metal and found objects, were surrealistic and subjective in content. “21/64” was an important early attempt at constructing a “perceptual” programme in space. The work is “objective”, “natural”, spontaneous and open-ended (as much as the dust cover permits) using the space outside the immediate environs of the structure as an integral element. Subsequent work in 1965/66 has become more disciplined, austere, symmetrical (close ended) and horizontal ...’
