The Windmill public house is on Clapham Common; the artist's studio at Clapham Common South Side was opposite. A pencil and wash drawing for this painting, also dated 1934, was included in the artist's retrospective exhibition at the South London Art Gallery, and is reproduced in the catalogue (82). It is less detailed than the painting, and shows exactly the same view and is squared for transfer.
