P07919 Gate 1981
Screenprint 7 1/2 × 8 7/8 (190 × 225) on paper 15 3/8 × 14 (390 × 355) from three screens (white and two shades of greenish-blue) with hand colouring in watercolour, printed by the artist (not editioned)
Purchased from the artist (Grant-in-Aid) 1984
These three prints [P07917, P07918, P07919] were made at Wimbledon School of Art while Clough was teaching there. In P07917 and P07918 the image from a single screen was used as a basis on which to try a variety of different drawn and painted additions. Clough would prepare a sheet in her own studio and then take it to Wimbledon and print the screen image over it, sometimes adding more work by hand afterwards. In ‘Fence/Climbing Plant’ there is a washed rubbed ground of soft grey with some purple and orange; in ‘Gate Detail’ the ground is also washed and rubbed with powdery-looking pigment, predominantly grey but with some pale yellow. In ‘Gate’ a more substantial screenprinted image is over-worked in red watercolour and crayon.
