‘Imitations’ is from a group of four prints as follows: ‘Concerning the Meal’, ‘Imitations’, ‘The Trace’ and ‘Things Seen’. All four prints refer to the ritual of dining in domestic surroundings. The central image of P07756 is an aeroplane depicted as though reflected in a glass top table. The table itself appears to be cracked and shows signs of the meal having ended. The cracked appearance is created by Cohen's use of deliberately fragmented plates, the edge of each plate revealing an unprinted, uneven line.
The imagery imployed in this work which includes aeroplanes, paddles, paw marks and hand prints is similar to that used in the other prints in the series and refer to Cohen's own living environment near the River Thames in Kew. For a discussion on the significance of these images see the entries on P05547 ‘Concerning the Meal’ 1980 and the painting T03284 ‘Matter of Identity III - The Trace’ 1977–9 in The Tate Gallery Illustrated Catalogue of Acquisitions 1980–82, pp.241 and 64–7.
