T00968 The Downs

Pencil, 8×10 5/8 (20.3×27).
Prov: ...; Herbert Powell (1863–1950); entrusted with the rest of his collection to the National Art-Collections Fund 1929; presented to the Tate Gallery by the N.A.-C.F. from the Herbert Powell Bequest 1967. Accession No. T00968.
Exh: Tate Gallery 1930, with other works from the Powell Collection (no catalogue); the collection was extensively toured by the N.A.-C.F. 1931–62 (No.18 in catalogue published by the N.A.-C.F., n.d.).

It is not known how this drawing came to be attributed to Constable. Possibly a resemblance was seen to such drawings as ‘Weymouth Bay from the Downs’, now in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester (TG 1976 No.148, Fleming-Williams 1976, Pl.20), but, if so, the connection is very superficial.
