In this image Cozens has made use of a 'dry brush' technique: using a brush that has almost run dry of ink, he has worked loosely to suggest variations in the landscape. He has chosen a very granular black ink, similar in appearance to fresh sepia. Cozens was a prolific maker of 'systems' for drawing, developing some twenty different schemes to aid artists wanting to invent landscape compositions. The layout of this image suggests it may have been made using his system called Descriptions of the various kinds of Composition of Landscape.
