A number of Davey's earlier works, such as 'Rail' look like architectural fixtures and fittings. In particular, Davey's works are often related to objects that function as barriers, such as manhole covers, seals and rails. So close are some aspects of these sculptures to the industrial objects they mimic, that they almost cease to declare themselves as art objects. This designation becomes dependent on their setting within a museum. However, Davey's borrowings from industrial models are frequently less literal: his sculptural objects reveal a level of artifice in their materials and manufacture that separates them from original prototypes.
