Fabro’s Foot comes from a series of works made in collaboration with traditional Italian craftspeople and artisans. These often employed elaborate materials ranging from Carrara marble to Murano glass bases, all clad in silken sleeves. In this example, Fabro has combined traditional materials (bronze and silk) with contemporary ones (Perspex and steel). These materials evoked arguably outmoded craft techniques as well as those of modern society. This combination reflects tensions between tradition and modernity at a time when Italy was undergoing unprecedented urbanisation and industrialisation.
