This work combines Finlay’s fondness for maritime imagery with his mischievously ironic references to art history. The abstract motif, suggestive of modern art, is incorporated into an image that resembles an old-fashioned illustration and therefore the opposite of everything popularly associated with ‘modern art’. At the same time, the lone boat suggests something of the heroic spirit of the pioneering modernist artist.
