Technique and condition
One small screen-printed square ceramic tile measuring 153 x 153 x 6 mm and weighing: 0.212 kg. This tile is a square version of T11766 and T11767 which are both round tiles.
Hamilton Finlay’s images for the series of seventeen tiles were executed by commercial ceramic companies, either H&R Johnson or Hereford tiles. This tile was press moulded with a manufacturer’s inscription ‘P C MADE IN ENGLAND ‘ between the ridged pattern on the unglazed reverse of the tile. The front of the tile was glazed cream and over glazed with the screen printed design. The red screen printed circle which extends to almost touch each side of the tile, is overprinted with the purple outlined imagery and text. The polychrome screen-printed tile may then have been fired again or alternatively, glazing inks, which can adhere to a glossy fired surface, may have been used.
Small dirty marks in the bottom left and the top right corners of the tile were removed with a dampened swab.
This tile can be displayed either wall hung, flat in a vitrine, alone, or in conjunction with others in the series of tiles.
