The stone group of ‘Birds Erect’ (Museum of Modern Art, New York), though one of Gaudier's latest and most abstract carvings, grew out of his numerous studies of birds such as these (see Ede in Le Jardin des Arts, 1955, pp.29–30). See also N03339.
