T00406 FEATURE IN A LANDSCAPE 1960
Inscr. ‘Gear’ 60' b.r. and on back of canvas ‘Gear Feature in Landscape Jan.’ 60'.
Canvas, 48×32 (122×81).
Purchased at Gimpel Fils (Knapping Fund) 1961.
Exh: Gimpel Fils, February 1961 (41, repr.).
Painted at the artist's studio, 9 Borough Lane, Eastbourne, during January 1960. He wrote (23 February 1961): ‘This painting can be regarded as the summation of a number of the factors I have pursued in my work, a biomorphic presence, a feature in a setting, a perceptual image, an evocation through colour and tone of landscape. The dark armature is present, though integrated within the whole. The flickering facets with their ambiguous spatial interplay are here more subdued and concentrated. The rendering of the paint is carefully suited to the mood of the painting.’
