Heartfield’s first photomontage for AIZ targeted the Social Democrat Party and its newspapers. As art historian David Evans points out, it plays on ‘blätter’ meaning both newspaper and cabbage leaves. The rivalry between the Communists and the Social Democrats is evident in the mocking poem ‘I am a cabbagehead’.
