Purchased from Will's Lane Gallery, St Ives (Grant-in-Aid) 1981
These three lithographs [P07479, P07480 and P07481] were drawn on plates at Hilton's home at Bottallack in West Penwith where he had been bedridden since October 1972. He made drawings and gouaches from his bed, adapting himself to using his right hand though naturally left-handed. These three prints relate closely to drawings of the same date and contain similar imagery: in P07479, a boat shape, breasts and leaves, in P07480 a nude on a couch against a stone wall at the right with another figure at centre (this particularly relates to drawings with titles such as ‘Reclining Nude and Figure’ or ‘Figure and Seated Nude’), and in P07481 a seated nude with handwriting. The writing reads ‘Put it in your pipe and smoke... up you’ at the right and ‘Lithograph’ at the left.
