Display caption
This illustration shows the artist’s wife playing ‘coach and horses’ with one of her children. It was included in a series ‘Touches of Nature’ for the sixpenny magazine Good Words. It illustrates a short poem by ‘RM’; the ‘treasure’ of the title is the ‘little babe upon my knees’.
Houghton was one of the most prolific Victorian illustrators, and a regular contributor to popular household magazines, such as Good Words and The Graphic. His illustrations are characterised by an extraordinary attention to detail which reflects the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites.
