A number of parallels can be drawn between this work and the one above. Apart from their small size and rapid execution, both illustrate the strong effects which can be produced with the pencil, particularly the contrasts of dark and light from the foreground to the background. Hunt's sketch, however, is characterised by his use of dense, horizontal strokes to represent solid areas. The pencil work in the sky area, and the silhouetting of the buildings in the foreground, suggest that the time of day is nightfall.
