In 1959 Irvin saw The New American Painting at the Tate Gallery. This exhibition was the first survey of Abstract Expressionism held in Britain and it confirmed Irvin in his progress towards abstraction. Since then he has made paintings whose main characteristics are abstract form and painterly gesture.Irvin is also a prolific maker of screenprints, which echo the concerns of his paintings. Druid II is one of a pair of prints which demonstrate the drama and energy at the heart of his work.
