This print is from a series of twenty-six woodcuts in cadmium red, all of which have the same rhomboid composition and which explore thirteen subtle variations on the vertical lines which break up the block of pure colour. Each variation has its mirror image within the suite. Judd followed this series with another very similar suite of twelve rhomboid woodcuts, this time printed in blue. Together the two groups constitute his first true incursion into the pure unmodulated colour and rigorous geometry of his later printed work.
