This group of stills is from a video piece by Michael Landy called Appropriations, which shows high street grocers setting up their stalls for the day, using plastic crates ‘borrowed’ from bread manufacturers or dairies as platforms for their goods. Following the systematic nature of each protagonist’s routine, the work focuses on the rituals imposed by labour. Landy draws attention to an economy that relies upon an act of appropriation and re-use. It is a practice that is recognised and repeated throughout the world.
