John Burke ‘Gap Between Upper Bala-Hissar and Bala-Burj, Looking Toward Beni-Hissar.’ The Bala Hissar is the citadel that straddles Kabul to this day. In Burke’s time it was part fortress, part barracks. Home to a small town of courtiers and servants, it also housed the British Embassy forced on the Afghans after the Treaty of Gandamak.
