This is one of a group of fourteen paintings made between 1969 and 1972; seven are titled Mister Paranoia and seven as Nothing to be Afraid of. Each consists of a black line – forming an irregular rhomboid, drawn close to the edge of the canvas. Within the delineated field at the bottom right is the work’s date. With works such as this Bob Law is not concerned with the process of painting as material, or with the idea of a minimalist capture of space through that material. The spare emptiness projects an experience of a serenity of presence.
