Lichtenstein’s paintings position popular culture within a fine art framework, appropriating images from comic books or advertisements. By rendering them in his trademark style, emphasising primary colours, sharp contours and magnified ‘Benday dots’, these originally mechanically reproduced images acquire new painterly qualities. The title of Mustard on White – which can be read as both a formalist description of its colours as well as well as a straightforward reference to commercial products - may be an ironic reference to the work of an older generation of abstract artists.
