P11098 Cornish Fields
1951
Screenprint 153 x 193 (6 x 7 5/8) on wove paper 254 x 280 (10 x 11); printed by the artist in an edition of 20
Inscribed ‘By Alix MacKenzie | (not her signature)' in another hand below image b.r.
Presented by Warren MacKenzie 1986
The three prints, P11096, P11097
and P11098 were made in St Ives, a year after Alix and Warren MacKenzie moved to Cornwall from America. They were made for the Prints under £1
exhibition at Robin Nance's shop, St Ives in December 1951, for which Alix MacKenzie designed the poster (Tate Gallery Archives TAP 1078). The exhibition included work by Warren and Alix MacKenzie, John Wells, Patrick Hayman and Peter Lanyon (see entries for Warren MacKenzie P04942, P02943
and P02944).
These were the artist's first screenprints. She used a combination of glue and tusche screens and film-cut screens, sometimes altering them by hand after printing, in the case of P11096
with charcoal.
In a letter to the compiler postmarked 25 November 1987, Warren MacKenzie wrote: ‘Alix was always drawing from what she saw and the gull on porch [P11096] was the back steps up to the studio ... I think Alix just liked bird shapes'.
P11097
does not represent a particular person.
