T03634 shows a section of Kensington Gardens with the chairs for hire tipped diagonally against one another or against a tree. Park attendants used to tip them in this manner in the evening to prevent rain or dew collecting on the seats. The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford owns a Maitland, ‘Park Scene’, oil on canvas (10 1/4 × 18 1/8ins.) which shows these chairs in their upright position.
