Moon made a number of sculptures in the early 1960s. The yellow and black bars which criss-cross the white ground in Untitled [8/71] point to Moon’s interest in Minimalism. An exhibition of work by the American sculptor Donald Judd at the Whitechapel in 1970 may have been a particular source of inspiration. Although Moon’s shaped canvases blur the distinctions between sculpture and painting, the artist was always eager to assert the pictorial qualities of his works.
