Piper and his friend John Betjeman were keen to promote interest in Victorian architecture, which had been unfashionable in the 1930s when they had first studied British buildings. GE Street was an architect they particularly admired, partly because of his use of coloured materials; Piper had at one time wanted to publish a book of drawings of his buildings. This church in Paddington, London, was designed by Street in the Gothic Revival style, between 1868 and 1871.
