Described by Raphael Read as ‘This is a dark plate, and portrays an evening effect’, and listed by him among etchings produced by his father in 1839–40, in a series which included views of Bala, Buttermere, Derwent Water and two other views of Windermere. ‘Moonlight, Windermere’ (172) and ‘Windermere, Ferry House’ (173) were included in the select series of thirteen etchings published by Read as Views of the English Lakes in 1840.
