A preliminary drawing made in 1897 for the etching executed the following year, which is recorded and reproduced in Laurence Binyon's William Strang: Catalogue of his Etched Work, 1906, p.139, No.344. The etching measures 10×7 in. and is in the same direction as N02079.
Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862–1938), poet and man of letters, author of Drake's Drum and Admirals All, as well as of two volumes of the official history of the First World War; he was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery from 1928 to 1937.
