This is one of a set of small-scale replicas of the eight scenes from the life of St Paul with which Thornhill painted the dome of St Paul's Cathedral between 1714 and 1717, one of the grandest decorative painting projects of its day. Like the original decorations, the replicas were painted by Thornhill himself in grisaille, and probably served as models for engravers to work from.
