T01150 No. 3 1964
Not inscribed.
Steel, 101½×18×15¼ (255×45.5×39).
Presented by Mr Alistair McAlpine 1969.
Coll: Purchased by the donor from the artist 1969.
Exh: British Sculpture in the Sixties, Tate Gallery, February–April 1965 (93, as ‘1964’).
This sculpture is unique, though the artist owns an identical cast painted blue. ‘No. 4’ 1964 (repr. British Sculpture in the Sixties, no. 64), incorporates into its two-column composition a cast which repeats the form of T1150 entire except for the ‘base’ element. Turnbull developed ‘No. 4’ after seeing ‘No. 3’ standing near another columnar form in his studio.
