Catalogue entry

The party presumably comprises members of Walter Fawkes’s household and guests, on the Yorkshire moors near Farnley Hall. For other views at and around Farnley Hall and nearby Yorkshire properties belonging to Fawkes see under folio 1 verso (D09790). There appears to be a small bridge in the distance between the figures towards the right, but otherwise there are no specific landmarks, although the setting may be on the moors north of Farnley, perhaps near the Dovestone, an outcrop recorded on other pages here; see under folio 36 recto (D09799; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 10). Compare the figures gathered outdoors on folio 33 recto (D09791; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 2), and another moorland scene on folio 55 recto (D09850; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 53).
Technical notes:
The sheet is darkened from prolonged exhibition except where the mount protected it around the edges.
Verso:
Blank
