Catalogue entry

The main sketch on this page depicts a panelled interior with a vase with the letter ‘R’ painted or engraved on it placed above a niche in front of a mirror. Beneath this is a separate sketch of a chandelier. The most likely location of this interior is at Sir Walter Scott’s home of Abbotsford, which Turner visited and sketched in the Abbotsford sketchbook (see Tate D26037; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 64a), although these sketches have not been linked to any particular room. The inscription at the left of the page, however, may read ‘Study’, which may indicate the door to Scott’s study from the Library or hallway (see Tate D26041; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 66a).
