Original watercolour: private collection (Wilton 1979, no.1093): For details of Scott's Poetical Works, see introduction to T04947-T04960. This plate was used as the title-page for a single volume edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart Complete, first published in 1841 and known as the Library Edition. The volume was republished in 1847; this impression comes from that edition. In the preface to the 1841 edition, the editor, John Gibson Lockhart, records that the volume was issued in response to the public's desire for compact, portable and inexpensive editions. Nearly all Scott's poems that had appeared in the twelve volume edition of 1833–4 (see T04947-T04960, T05134-T05145) were included in this single volume.
This subject is virtually identical in its composition to the view of Abbotsford (Rawlinson II 1913, no.516; see T04960) that was engraved for the Poetical Works by Henry Le Keux in 1834, although it is over twice the size of the earlier plate and lacks the decorative border.
