Display caption

In the eighteenth century this Norman castle on the River Alne was extensively re-modelled by Robert Adam in the fashionable neo-Gothic style. Turner has chosen to show the castle by moonlight which adds an element of the fantastic to the style of the architecture. The sparkling highlights on the buildings and the light sources emanating from some windows of the castle are superbly rendered
in the engraving.
