During the years immediately following his Rhine tour, Turner painted seven repetitions of the Fawkes scenes for different patrons. These were all painted on white and were executed with a much higher degree of finish (see no.17). No.14 is a preparatory study for a repetition of the 1817 view of Boppard, just as nos.15 and 16 were for no.17. Its colour scheme is very close to that of no.16, as too must have been its original size. Turner's second 'Boppard' was almost certainly intended for a book of Rhine views which was initiated in 1819 but had to be abandoned at a very early stage.
