For the history and situation of the building, see the entry for folio 15 recto (D12335). This is the second of two relatively slight views, apparently looking north-east over Stockley Beck. Turner’s viewpoint is comparable with those of the Buck brothers’ 1728 engraving1 and a late Victorian photograph of the castle,2 by then much rebuilt. There are other sketches on folios 74 verso and 75 verso (D12410, D12412).
