Display caption

A sheet from Turner's 'Fribourg, Lausanne and Geneva' sketchbook of 1841. Turner made a number of watercolours of Chillon, which he first saw in 1802. Byron visited it twice in 1816, and that year wrote his 'Prisoner of Chillon', telling the story of the Genevan patriot Bonnivard, imprisoned by the Duke of Savoy.
