Catalogue entry

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page with a view of the city of Coutances in Normandy. The crumbling medieval aqueduct crosses the right-hand side of the page while the cathedral is shown in the upper left-hand quadrant. Multiple pages in this volume feature sketches of this settlement and its monuments, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction.
