Catalogue entry

Turner entered Rome on the Via Cassia from the north. This inverted sketch represents a view of the city from the road with the distant dome of St Peter’s. The irregular and shaky line indicates that the artist was drawing swiftly from a moving carriage. The drawing spills over slightly onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 91 (D14830).
