In September 1845 Turner made his second short trip to France of that year. It was to be the last time he left England. He crossed to Dieppe and travelled along the coast towards Eu and Le Tréport. At Eu, where he made a number of watercolours, Turner renewed his acquaintance with Louis-Philippe, the 'Citizen King' of France. He dined with Louis-Philippe at the King's favourite country seat, the large structure visible at the right of this picture. Turner's stay at Eu coincided with the visit made by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to the French monarch, a timing that was probably calculated on the artist's part.
