These studies of the choir screen at York Minster are part of a group of small cards which have been variously attributed to Turner, to his contemporary Thomas Girtin, or to others of the circle of artists who used to meet in Dr Munro's informal sketching 'Academy' in the Adelphi. The cards may have been used by Turner in conjunction with his sketchbooks. There are some discrepancies between the figures represented here and the screen as it is today, which cannot be accounted for by nineteenth-century restoration.
